Tour Overview

This is our shortest birding tour in the North of Peru, the area is home of unique endemic bird species found no where else.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Chiclayo- Bosque Pomac – Olmos

Today we will travel from Chiclayo to Bosque Pomac, at Bosque Puma’s dry forest we will look for: Peruvian Plant Cutter (Phytotoma raimondii), Rufous Flycatcher (Myiarchus semirufus), Tumbes Swalow (Tachycineta stolzmanni), Scarlet Backed Woodpecker (Veniliornis callonotus), Necklaced Spinetail (Synallaxis stictothorax), and Cinereous Finch. after birding Bosque Pomac we will continue to Olmos pass and Quebrada limon in order to see the endemic White winged Guan (Penelope albipennis), Tumbes Tyrant (Tumbezia salvini), Elegant Crescentchest (Melanopareia elegans), Guayaquil woodpecker (Campephilus gayaquilensis), Red masked Parakeet among other birds; we will spend the night at Olmos in a local Hotel.

Day 2: Olmos - Limon de Purcoya – Jaen

This day we will travel to Limon the Purcoya very, the area is a very good site for birding where we can see. ***Piura Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca piurae), Chapman´s Antshire, Black Cowlet Saltator (Saltator nigriceps), Ecuadorian piculet (Picumnus sclateri), Rufous Necked Foliage gleaner (Syndactyla ruficollis), Henna Hooded Foliage Gleaner (Hylocryptus erythrocephalus), Purcoya Hermit and Bay Crowned Brush Finch. After explore the area we will continue towards Jaenñ before Jaen we will make a stop in order to find the following species: Little Inca Finch, Marañon Crescent chest (Melanopareia maranonica), Chichipe Spinetail (Synallaxis stictothorax) and Marañon Slaty Antshire.

Day 3: Jaen - Pomacochas or Florida.

Today in our way to Pomacochas we will look for the following species: Little Inca Finch (Incaspiza watkinsi), Spotted Rail (Pardirallus maculates), Marañon Spinetail (Synallaxis maranonica), Yellow Tailed Oriole (Icterus mesomelas), Marañon Thrush (Turdus maranonicus), and Buff Bellied Tanager (Thlypopsis inornata), besides the birds mentioned above we can also several species of hummingbirds (Trochilidae), seedeaters. In this day we will have the chance to see the Endemic and very Famous Marvelous Spatuletail; humming like Little Woodstar (Chaetocercus bombus), purple Collared Woodstar (Myrtis fanny), Purple Throated Sunangel (Heliangelus viola), Andean Emerald (Amazilia franciae) can also be found in the area. We will spend the Night at Puma cochas.

Day 4: Pomacochas- Abra Patricia

This day we will look for the very elusive ***Rusty tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), as well as for ***Russet mantled Softailm (Thripophaga berlepschi), Blackish Tapaculo (Scytalopus latrans), Red Hooded Tanager (Piranga rubriceps), and White capped Diper (Cinclus leucocephalus). At our Lodge in Abra Patricia we will spend two nights; in the area we will look for the famous long whiskered Owlet.

Day 5: Abra Patricia lodge area all day

Along the road on the cloud forest this day we will look for very nice to tanagers (Thraupidae), flycatchers (Tyrannidae), and Endemic Species like: Speckle Chested Piculet (Picumnus steindachneri), Ocre Fronted Antpitta (Grallaricula ochraceifrons), Bar Winged Wood wren (Henicorhina leucoptera), Royal Sunangel (Heliangelus regalis), cinnamon Breasted tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus cinnamomeipectus), ***Inca Flycatcher (Leptopogon taczanowskii), Vermilion Tanager (Calochaetes coccineus), Ecuadorian Pietail, Andean Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Red Ruffd Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus), White Capped tanager (Sericossypha albocristata), Yellow Scarf Tanager (Iridosornis reinhardti), Chestnut Crestescotinga Lulu´s Tody Flycatcher, ***Chestnut Antpitta (Grallaria blakei) and a lot more bird species.

Day 6: Abra Patricia – Rioja

In our way to Rioja, we will have the chance to see species like: Golden Collared Honeycreeper (Iridophanes pulcherrimus), Virsicolored Barbet (Eubucco versicolor), Black Bellied Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster), Lanceolated Monklet (Micromonacha lanceolata), Masket Trogon (Trogon personatus), Crested Quetzal (Pharomachrus antisianus), Speckle Chested Piculet (Picumnus steindachneri), Blue Browed Tanager (Tangara cyanotis), White Collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus), Crimson Mantled Woodpecker (Piculus rivolii),White Capped Diper (Cinclus leucocephalus), Point Tailed Palmcreeper (Berlepschia rikeri), Russet Crowned Crake (Anurolimnas viridis), Yellow Tyrannulet (Capsiempis flaveola), Stripe Necked Tody Tyrant and Blakish Rail. We will spend the night at Rioja in a local Hotel.

Day 7: Rioja – Wakanky Lodge (Moyobamba)

This day we will start Birding at Morro de Calzada community, in the area we will look for some endemic species; in the artea we can see species like: ***Misshana Tyranunnlet (Zimmerius villarejoi), Red legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus), Red billed Tyrannulet (Zimmerius cinereicapilla), Stripe Manakin (Machaeropterus regulus), Cinereous Breasted (Spinetail Synallaxis hypospodia), lafresnaye´spiculet, Buff Throated Tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus rufigularis), Fiery capped Manakin (Machaeropterus pyrocephalus) and pale Breasted Thrush (Turdus leucomelas). Later we will continue towards Wakanky Lodge; at the lodge there are some hummingbird feeders that attract several species of hummingbirds (Trochilidae), there you will have the chance to take some photos.

Day 8: Wakanky – Tarapoto

In the morning we will look for birds around the Loge as we well as we along of some of the trails that are found close to the lodge; we can find in the area the following birds: Fiery throated Fruiteater (Pipreola chlorolepidota), White bellied Tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus griseipectus), White Plumed Antbird (Pithys albifrons), Spot Backed Antbird (Hylophylax naevius), Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulean), Black and white tody tyrant (Poecilotriccus capitalis), Short Tailed pygmy Tyrant (Myiornis ecaudatus), Black faced Tanager (Schistochlamys melanopis) Misshana Tyrannulet among (Zimmerius villarejoi) other birds. Later we will return to the lodge in order to pick up our luggage and continue traveling towards Tarapoto where we can have the chance to see the special Oilbird.

Day 9: Tarapoto – Yurimaguas - Tarapoto

This day we will have the chance to see the following species: Spotted Tanager (Tangara punctata), Plumbeous Euphonia (Euphonia plumbea), Koepcke´s Hermit (Phaethornis koepckeae), Masked Tanager (Tangara nigrocincta), Blackish Pewee (Contopus nigrescens), Dotted Tanager (Tangara varia), Slaty capped Shrike vireo (Vireolanius leucotis), Solitary Eagle (Buteogallus solitaries), Scaled pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa) and a lot more bird species.

Day 10: Tarapoto – Lima

Before head to the airport in Tarapoto we will visit Juanjui, in the area we will look for: Rusty Backed Antwren (Formicivora rufa), Peruvian meadowlark (Sturnella bellicose), Spotted Rail (Pardirallus maculates), Oriole Black Bird (Gymnomystax mexicanus), Marañon Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Coraya Wren (Pheugopedius coraya), Sulphur Bellied Tyrant Manakin (Neopelma sulphureiventer), White Browed Antbird (Myrmoborus leucophrys), and Hoatzin (Ophisthocomus hoazin). Later we will head to the airport in order to take the plane to Lima; at the airport our services end.
