Tour Itinerary
DAY 1: Cusco to Pilcopata Lodge – Gateway to the Manu Cloud Forest
- Departure from Cusco & Andean Valleys: Our Manu journey begins very early in the morning from Cusco in one of our specially prepared vehicles. We'll pass through interesting inter-Andean valleys and picturesque farming communities.
- History and Culture: By midday, we'll visit the ancient pre-Inca buried towers of Ninamarca, known as "chullpas." Afterwards, we'll reach the town of Paucartambo, a typical colonial town that once held great importance and still retains its charm.
- Ascent to Acjanaco Pass & Cloud Forest Immersion: Continuing our journey, we'll ascend to the Acjanaco Pass, located at 3850 meters above sea level, the entrance point to Manu National Park. From here, we begin our descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species.
- Cloud Forest Wildlife: Keep an eye out for the spectacular and elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos Ornatus) and "The Cock of the Rock" (Peru's National Bird). In the cloud forest, we'll visit a Cock of the Rock lek, where these birds perform a very interesting courtship dance called "Displays" every morning and evening. We'll also observe lush flora including orchids, bromeliads, and ferns.
- Overnight at Pilcopata Lodge: We will spend our first night at the comfortable Pilcopata Lodge, immersed in the sounds of the jungle.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:
- Cloud forest hikes in Manu.
- Visit to the Lek of Peru's National Bird (Cock of the Rock).
- Optional visit to a tanager garden.
DAY 2: Pilcopata Lodge to Atalaya & Manu Lodge – River & Jungle Exploration
- Early Walk & Breakfast: Before breakfast, we'll take a walk, along the way we can spot birds and have the opportunity to see some small monkey species. After a two-hour walk, we'll enjoy our well-deserved breakfast at Puerto de Atalaya, from where we will continue our tour by boat.
- Boat Journey on the Alto Madre de Dios River: After approximately 20 minutes of boat navigation, we'll walk to Cocha Machuhuasi; there we will have the chance to see various bird species as well as some capybaras and monkeys.
- Arrival at Manu Lodge & Evening Walk: In the afternoon, we'll arrive at our lodge for lunch and a short break before starting our evening walk. This afternoon, with luck, on our walk, we'll have the chance to see some monkeys, macaws, and toucans.
- Tapir Clay Lick & Starlit Night: This afternoon, we will also visit a Tapir clay lick from a blind, returning to the lodge for dinner.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:
- Visit to a Cocha (oxbow lake).
- Night walks in the Manu jungle.
- Jungle exploration and tapir spotting.
DAY 3: Manu Lodge All Day – Deep Immersion in Biodiversity
- Morning Exploration & Avifauna: Our lodge has several trails to explore. This day, before breakfast, we will explore one of the trails, having the opportunity to see various bird species such as tanagers, flycatchers, trogons, parrots, macaws, falcons, and manakins.
- Mammals and Reptiles of Manu: In addition to birds, we may also see various species of monkeys, peccaries, and perhaps even a jaguar or puma. Late in the afternoon, we will visit a lake near the lodge where we can observe some caimans.
- Flexible Day Options: If weather conditions are good, we will visit the parrot clay lick, and on the way back to the lodge, we will visit Cocha Machuhuasi where various species of birds, as well as monkeys and other mammals, can be observed.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:
- Trail exploration at Manu Lodge.
- Birdwatching (tanagers, toucans, macaws).
- Mammal spotting (monkeys, peccaries, jaguars).
- Lake visit for caiman observation.
- Optional: Macaw Clay Lick, Parrot Clay Lick, and Cocha Machuhuasi.
DAY 4: From Manu Lodge to Cusco – Farewell to the Amazon
- Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick Spectacle: We will wake up early to visit a parrot clay lick where we can see three types of macaws, parrots, and parakeets. This is a clay wall on the riverbank where different species of parrots and macaws descend every morning to extract minerals necessary for their dietary balance.
- Return to Cusco: After this impressive activity, we will return to Atalaya by boat, where our private bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco via the cloud forest and Paucartambo. We will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon.

- Birdwatching at the clay lick (macaws, parrots, parakeets).
- Quetzal spotting (optional en route).
- Search for Peru's National Bird (Cock of the Rock in the cloud forest).
