Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Bamboo Lodge
Leaving Cusco after breakfast, we travel through traditional Quechua communities and the spectacular eastern ranges of the Andes to the village of Paucartambo. We will visit local craftsmen famous for Andean masks before ascending to the final pass overlooking the Amazon Basin. We then begin a breathtaking descent from 3,500m to 1,600m into the orchid-laden Cloud Forest. This spectacular journey passes cascading waterfalls and multicolored birds, arriving at our Bamboo Lodge in the late afternoon.
Day 2: Bamboo Lodge – Atalaya – Hot Springs – Boca Manu
After breakfast, we continue by private bus to Atalaya. Along the way, we stop to observe a coca plantation and a viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the jungle and river. From Atalaya, we board a motorized boat to Aguas Calientes to bathe in natural hot springs. We then continue by boat to Boca Manu Lodge. In the afternoon, we enjoy a jungle hike to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna. An optional night walk is available to search for Caimans before returning for dinner.
Day 3: Boca Manu – Manu National Park Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka
Today, we journey deep into the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park along the Manu River. After registering at the Limonal Park Ranger Station, we travel to Casa Matsiguenka lodge. During the boat trip, look for wildlife including Toucans, Macaws, Capybaras, Tapirs, and Caimans. If we are lucky, we may spot a lone Jaguar. We arrive mid-afternoon near the Salvador Oxbow Lake, where we will spend two nights.
Day 4: Exploring Cocha Salvador (Oxbow Lake) & Giant River Otters
An early start takes us by canoe to Cocha Salvador, a tranquil oxbow lake. We will search for Giant River Otters (River Wolves), a rare and endangered species common in Manu. Other wildlife sightings may include Agami Herons, Hoatzins (prehistoric birds), and up to 13 species of monkeys, including Red Howler Monkeys. After lunch, we hike through Terra Firma forest with an ecologist guide to learn about the complex ecosystem. In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset swim in the river before returning to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge.
Day 5: Reserved Zone – Tapir Clay Lick & Night Observation
We travel downstream for 6 hours from the Manu River to the Madre de Dios region. After arriving at our lodge, we take a guided walk through the forest to observe exotic birds like Macaws and Toucans. The highlight is the Tapir Clay Lick, where we spend the night on a specialized observation platform. From this blind, guests can watch Tapirs consuming mineral-rich clay. This site also attracts deer, peccaries, spider monkeys, and parakeets.
Day 6: The Great Macaw Clay Lick – Manu Park Wildlife Spectacle
Very early in the morning, we travel downriver to the largest Macaw Clay Lick in Manu. This is one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles. Around 5:30 am, hundreds of parrots arrive, followed by large Macaws (7:00 am). Watch as 80 to 100 macaws and over 600 parrots descend to the riverbank to eat clay. Keep an eye out for predators like hawks, eagles, or ocelots. After this colorful display, we sail back upriver to our lodge for the final night.
Day 7: Tapir Lodge – Colorado – Puerto Maldonado
Today we begin our return journey from the Amazon Jungle. After a boat ride to the mining town of Colorado, we travel to Puerto Maldonado via the new Interoceanic Road. We arrive in Puerto Maldonado around 11:00 am, where you can take your flight back to Cusco or Lima (flight tickets not included).
