By day, we’ll seek out various species, focusing on their unique behaviors and adaptations. As night falls again, the forest transforms into a bustling stage for nocturnal amphibians. We'll continue our quest for the charismatic Clown Tree Frogs and White-lined Leaf Frogs, refining our techniques for macro photography in their natural settings. Every rustle and call offers a potential subject, making for an incredibly rewarding photographic experience.
Day 3: Riverine Journey & the Jewel-Toned Poison Frogs to Mashko Lodge
After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive to the bustling Atalaya Port. Here, we trade our vehicle for a comfortable riverboat, beginning a captivating journey downriver, deeper into the untouched primary rainforest. The river itself is a lifeline, and we'll make strategic stops along its banks, venturing into specific locations renowned for their elusive poison frog populations. Our primary targets for the day are the iconic Manu Poison Frog and the strikingly patterned Spotted-thighed Poison Frog. We'll also keep our eyes peeled for the charming Polka-dot Tree Frog, capturing their vibrant colors against the verdant backdrop of their pristine habitat as we make our way to the rustic charm of Mashko Lodge.
Day 4: Unveiling Mashko's Amphibian Tapestry
A full day awaits us at Mashko Lodge, dedicated to exploring the rich amphibian diversity of its immediate surroundings. Our excursions will take us along forest trails and into wetland areas, focusing on a variety of tree frogs perched amongst the foliage, as well as fascinating terrestrial frogs and toads hidden on the forest floor. The forest floor here is particularly rich, offering fantastic opportunities to photograph the beautiful Amarakaeri Poison Frog and to further document the exquisite patterns of the Spotted-thighed Poison Frog. Upon arrival and settling into our accommodations, we waste no time. The afternoon and evening will be spent exploring the virgin forests surrounding the lodge, a new and exciting territory for amphibian discovery. Our initial forays will focus on identifying and photographing both terrestrial species, masterfully camouflaged among the leaf litter, and arboreal frogs, often found clinging to leaves or branches high above. This transitional day promises fresh photographic challenges and the excitement of encountering new species.
Day 6, 7, 8, 9: Deep Immersion & Specialist Photography at Papaya Lodge
The next four days are the pinnacle of our amphibian photography expedition, dedicated entirely to the exceptionally diverse habitats around Papaya Lodge. This incredible area boasts a serene oxbow lake, dynamic secondary forest, and pristine terra firme (upland) forest, each offering unique amphibian inhabitants. Our primary focus will be on maximizing our time to photograph a wide array of tree frogs and terrestrial species. We'll specifically target the beautifully marked Spotted-thighed Poison Frog, the subtly elegant Pale-striped Poison Frog (Ameerega hahneli), and the charming Polka-dot Tree Frog.
