Colorfull Birds of Peru

Peru is one of the richest countries in the world for bird diversity — with around 1,800 + recorded species spread across its varied ecosystems, from Amazon rainforest and Andean cloud forests to coastal deserts and wetlands. This makes it a prime spot for birdwatching and photography.

1. Andean Cock‑of‑the‑Rock

A national symbol of Peru, this striking bird is famous for its bright orange and red plumage and unique courtship displays in the cloud forests.

2. Paradise Tanager

A brilliantly multicolored songbird with green, blue, yellow, and red feathers, often found in the Amazon rainforest canopy.

3. Inca Tern

Distinctive for its white mustache‑like facial feathers and bright red bill, this coastal seabird breeds along Peru’s Pacific shores.

4. Marvelous Spatuletail Hummingbird

A rare and stunning hummingbird endemic to northern Peru, known for its unique elongated tail feathers and iridescent sheen.

5. Yellow‑hooded Blackbird

Common in Amazonian wetland areas near Iquitos, this bird’s bold yellow and black plumage makes it easy to spot.

6. Rusty‑bellied Brushfinch

An Andean species with warm rusty underparts and a distinctive look, often seen in highland shrublands.

7. White‑bellied Cinclodes

A rare high‑Andean bird adapted to fragile peatland ecosystems, notable for its light belly and mountain habitat.

8. Peruvian Warbling Antbird

Subtle but beautifully patterned, this bird adds to Peru’s rich cast of forest‑dwelling avifauna.
